SINGAPORE (Feb. 5, 2013) – Glory Sports International, the parent company of the world’s new premiere kickboxing league, GLORY World Series, today announced the appointment of former WWE Executive VP Andrew Whitaker to the position of global CEO of Glory Sports International.

“We are excited that Andrew has agreed to assume the leadership mantel at GLORY in the pivotal role of CEO, on the front lines of our fast-growing organization,” said GLORY Sports International Chairman, co-founder, and award-winning hedge fund investor Pierre Andurand. “Andrew’s breadth of global experience in the media space is a tremendous asset to GLORY’s day-to-day business.”

“Andrew joining as CEO is an important milestone in the development of GLORY as a company and kickboxing as a sport. We’ve had an incredible first year – we have over 40 of the world’s top kickboxing athletes signed to us exclusively, we’ve staged four amazing events, achieved TV distribution in 200 countries and trended No. 1 globally on Twitter on New Year’s Eve 2012 – GLORY and kickboxing are for real. As we start a new season in 2013, we have a calendar of over 10 events on 3 continents, an active global standard for athlete rankings, and we are rolling out a successful global format for kickboxing tournaments with our Grand Slams, Slams and Road to GLORY events. In addition, we are fully committed to entering the US market, and we are delighted Andrew has joined GLORY to oversee all this growth.”

Marcus Luer, co-founder of Glory Sports International, who has spearheaded GLORY’s rapid global expansion as interim-CEO over the last year since its inception, will resume the title Managing Director, allowing him to drive many of GLORY’s initiatives in Asia where he continues as CEO and founder of Asia’s leading, full-service sports marketing agency, TSA.

“At the same time,” Andurand continued, “this move will free up Marcus to focus on building the GLORY brand in the territories where his experience and business relationships are greatest.”

Whitaker will be spearheading the opening of a new GLORY office in the tri-state region of the United States.

Prior to joining GLORY Sports International, Whitaker was the Managing Partner of Kings Highway Media, a global brand and media distribution advisory that serves sports and entertainment IP rightsholders, private equity and venture capital.

Whitaker also served as the Executive Vice President of International for NYSE-listed WWE Inc. where he was responsible for establishing and growing the leading professional wrestling entertainment company’s business via sales, marketing, promotion and public and government relations across television, digital media, live events, licensing and PPV/VOD.

Last week, GLORY debuted its new ROAD TO GLORY development fight series uniquely designed to identify and develop future kickboxing champions and other superstars in the U.S. and elsewhere, with an eight-man light heavyweight tournament (209 pounds/95 kilograms) at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Okla. On Saturday, Feb. 9, the ROAD TO GLORY series heads to Hollywood Park Casino in Los Angeles, Calif. with an eight-man middleweight (187 pounds/85 kilograms) tournament.

The next stop for GLORY’s championship series, home to the world’s greatest kickboxers, will be Excel Arena in London, England, where a stacked fight card, headlined by a heavyweight showdown between superstar Tyrone KING OF THE RING Spong (68-6-1 42 KO’s) and decorated, all-time great Remy THE FLYING GENTLEMAN Bonjasky (77-15, 40 KO’s), will take place on Saturday, March 23.

Christian Hammer – wer ist das denn? Das werden sicher viele rumänische Boxfreunde am 22. Februar beim Profi-Kampftag in Galati fragen, wenn der Schwergewichtler aus Deutschland in den Ring steigt und den „Hammer“ rausholt. Wenn sie aber den Geburtsnamen des Boxers hören, der am 27. September 1987 in Galati zur Welt kam, dann wird es bei den Box-Fans ganz schnell „klick“ machen. Na klar, das ist doch Cristian Ciocan, der sich den Kampf-Namen Christian Hammer zugelegt hat. Unser Cristian ist das, der für Rumänien die Junioren-Weltmeisterschaft erkämpft hat!

Dieser Triumph ist allerdings schon ein paar Jahre her, denn seit 2008 schlägt Hammer in Deutschland als Profi zu. Mit Erfolg! Seine Kampfbilanz: 12 Siege, davon 8 durch Knockout, bei nur drei Niederlagen. Und Titel hat er auch schon eingesammelt, beide im vergangenen Jahr: Internationaler Deutscher Meister im Schwergewicht und WBO-Europameister!

Christians Gegner für Galati steht auch bereits fest: Olek Mazikin aus der Ukraine! Diesen Kampf hatte Christians Hamburger Promoter Erol Ceylan dem Ukrainer am 28. September 2012 bei seinem EC-Kampftag in Göttingen versprochen. Und das kam so: Weil der von Ceylan als Hammer-Gegner verpflichtete Danny Williams aus England vor dem Kampf in Göttingen plötzlich immer neue, zusätzliche Forderungen stellte, rief der EC-Boss einfach Mazikin zuhause in Kharkov an, um für den Ernstfall (wenn Williams nicht kämpft) einen Ersatzgegner für Christian zu haben. Mazikin sagte auch prompt zu, packte seinen Koffer und reiste sofort in Göttingen an.

Da Tyson-Bezinger Williams (K.o. 4.Runde) aber sogar noch in der Kabine Forderungen stellte, zog Mazikin sich ebenfalls um, marschierte in Kampfkleidung und bereits mit Handschuhen an den Fäusten, die auch schon von Supervisor Koko Kovacs abgezeichnet waren, wenige Meter hinter Williams zum Ring.

Ceylan: „Ich war bis zur letzten Sekunde unsicher, ob Williams, dessen zusätzliche Wünsche bzw. Forderungen ich ja alle abgelehnt hatte, wirklich das Treppchen zum Ring hochsteigen würde. Wenn nicht, hätte jetzt ja Mazikin gegen Christian einspringen können“.

Der inzwischen „weichgekloppte“ Williams, er kämpfte 2004 übrigens gegen WBC-Weltmeister Vitali Klitschko) boxte tatsächlich in ‚Göttingen, das heißt, er versuchte zu boxen. Denn er bekam von Christian Hammer eine mächtige Tracht Prügel, war zweimal am Boden. In Runde 4 war dann auch schon alles vorbei und die schweren Herren konnten unter die Dusche.

Ceylan: „Für sein sportliches Verhalten in Göttingen bekommt Mazikin jetzt auch die versprochene Belohnung, er darf in Galati gegen Christian um den WBO-Europatitel kämpfen“.

Spannender hätte der EM-Kampf zwischen Eduard Gutknecht und Jürgen Brähmer am Samstagabend wohl nicht verlaufen können. In einer packenden Ringschlacht verbuchte der Herausforderer aus Schwerin am Ende das bessere Ende für sich, setzte sich vor 4.500 begeisterten Box-Fans in der Berliner Max-Schmeling-Halle (und über 3 Millionen Fernsehzuschauern in der ARD) gegen den Gifhorner Gutknecht mit 114:113, 116:111 und 117:110 einstimmig nach Punkten durch. Damit eroberte Brähmer nicht nur den EM-Titel, sondern erkämpfte auch das Recht, um die WBO-Weltmeisterschaft im Halbschwergewicht zu boxen.

Da es sich bei dem Aufeinandertreffen um ein Stall-Duell zweier Kämpfer des Sauerland-Teams handelte, ging es auf der anschließenden Pressekonferenz in der Nacht auf Sonntag natürlich hoch her. Erfolgscoach Ulli Wegner, der Gutknecht trainiert, war wütend über die Niederlage seines Kämpfers. „Das Urteil war okay. Nur wie anscheinend in den ersten Runden gepunktet wurde, das war für mich nicht in Ordnung“, sagte der 70-Jährige. Und ähnlich hat es Wilfried Sauerland gesehen, der den EM-Kampf in Südafrika im TV schaute. „Ich hatte ja bereits vorher gesagt, dass ich kein Freund von Stall-Duellen bin. Es war ein toller Kampf, den Jürgen Brähmer letztlich verdient gewonnen hat“ , so Sauerland. „Ulli Wegner ist ein Trainer, der mit vollem Herzen dabei ist, deshalb sollte man seine Äußerungen auf der Pressekonferenz auch nicht überbewerten. Es war vielleicht knapper, als es das Urteil am Ende ausgesagt hat. Die Punktrichter waren neutral und deshalb hat Brähmer den Sieg völlig zu Recht zugesprochen bekommen. Ich denke, Ulli Wegner wird einsehen, dass er mit seinen Äußerungen über die Stränge geschlagen hat.“

Das sieht inzwischen auch Ulli Wegner so. „Für mich gibt es nichts Schlimmeres als Niederlagen. Ich muss zugeben, dass die Emotionen mit mir durchgegangen sind. Das tut mir leid und dafür möchte ich mich entschuldigen. Doch ich möchte das Thema jetzt abhaken. Ab Montag geht es mit der Vorbereitung von Arthur Abraham für den nächsten Kampf weiter.“

Dustin Jacoby pulls off miracle tournament win, after accepting entry on 48 hours notice, in first-ever ROAD TO GLORY – USA event earns $20.000 grand prize and one year GLORY WORD SERIES contract.

TULSK, Oklaoma (Feb. 02, 2013) – After accepting the opportunity to fight just one day before the event, 24-year-old Dustin Jacoby (9-3) of Arenzville, Illin. rose to the occasion, defeating three consecutive opponents, all by way of (T)KO, in one night to capture the inaugural ROAD TO GLORY USA light heavyweight (209 pounds/95 kilograms) tournament championship at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa on Friday, Feb. 1.

Jacoby was called on to compete just 48 hours in advance of the event and drove to Tulsa from Arenzville, after Manuel Quezada, one of the original eight entrants, suddenly withdrew from the tournament for unknown reasons.

In the tournament’s quarterfinal stage, reigning ISKA world champion Randy Blake BOOM BOMM (25-2, 17 KOs) of Tulsa, a local superstar and favorite to win the tournament, battered the left leg of Jacoby and hammered Jacoby with punching combinations for over two rounds. In the third stanza, though, Jacoby suddenly countered with a flurry that put Blake down and forced the referee to intervene and stop the bout at the 1:43 mark of the final scheduled round.

In the semifinal stage, Jacoby faced off with Roy Boughton WRECKIN´ BALL (9-4, 8 KOs), who had defeated Daniel Brison SANDMAN (9-3, 6 KOs) by way of unanimous decision to advance past the quarterfinal stage. After eating a right hand, Jacoby responded with a series of stiff jabs that snapped Boughton’s head back.

Jacoby exploded with a knee strike to the head that sent Boughton to the canvas. Boughton beat the referee’s 10 count, but was put down for the second time with a Jacoby left hook to the body. The tournament’s “two knockdown rule” took effect, giving Jacoby the TKO victory at the 2:47 mark of the second round.

With a considerable amount of momentum behind him, Jacoby came out the aggressor in the tournament’s championship round, against previously undefeated Brian Collette (19-1, 16 KOs), who had scored a second round (:14) KO on Jeremy Freitag in the quarterfinal round of the event and a first round (1:29) TKO on Kyle Martin in the semifinal stage of the tournament.

Jacoby began connecting with a series of stiff jabs and a left hook to Collette’s body. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening round of action, Jacoby unloaded a barrage that put Collette on the mat face first, unable to recover. Jacoby was declared the victor of the bout by way of first round (3:00) KO.

Der mit Spannung erwartete EM-Kampf zwischen Eduard Gutknecht und Jürgen Brähmer (morgen ab 22.30 Uhr live in der ARD) lockt auch deutsche Stars und Sternchen in die Berliner Max-Schmeling-Halle.

Schlager-Star Matthias Reim, der kürzlich sein neues Hit-Album „Unendlich“ veröffentlichte, wird mit Manager Dieter Weidenfeld und WBO-Weltmeister Marco Huck zum Kampf kommen. Reim: „Ich plane, einen Song für Marco Huck zu schreiben. Deshalb schaue ich mir mit Marco meinen ersten Kampf an, damit er mir alles erklären kann.“

Entertainer und Musiker Frank Zander wird seinem „Kumpel“ Ulli Wegner und dessen Schützling Eduard Gutknecht die Daumen drücken, der Künstler Bruno Bruni hingegen Jürgen Brähmer. Comedian Volker „Zack“ Michalowski lässt kaum eine Boxveranstaltung aus und bleibt neutral. Eine Premiere gibt es für die deutsche Schauspielerin Anne-Sophie Briest, die zum ersten Mal einen großen Kampf aus Reihe eins bestaunen wird. Ihr Kollege Tobias Licht hat als Box-Fan schon größere Ring-Erfahrung. Natascha Ochsenknecht begleitet ihre Freundin und Sauerlands „First Lady“ Cecilia Breakhus. Und Action-Star Tom Beck (bekannt aus der Erfolgsserie „Alarm für Cobra 11“) wird noch ein Stück näher an den Box-Stars sein. Er singt „When You Go“ als Einlaufsong für Jürgen Brähmer. Last but not least hat sich noch ein Überraschungs-Gast angekündigt, den man nicht unbedingt bei einem Box-Kampf vermuten würde. Wer dies ist, wird morgen in der ARD-Livesendung aufgelöst.

Außerdem wollen natürlich die Weltmeister Arthur Abraham und Yoan Pablo Hernandez (trotz gebrochener Hand) als Zuschauer in der Max-Schmeling-Halle dabei sein. Ebenfalls am Ring erwartet werden Schwergewichtler Robert Helenius und Ex-WBO-Titelträger Robert Stieglitz.
